JOSEPHINE & HARRY

She was a society bride of six months living in Boston. He was a death- and sun-worshipping playboy poet living in Paris, kin to the famous Morgan financier.

THEIR STORY

Josephine met Harry on a trousseau-buying trip to Venice where he was vacationing with his wife.

She was a product of her time, gender and class: a debutante, on a one-way street to a proper marriage.

He was a product of his time, gender and class: a free-wheeling, playboy poet living extravagantly on family money. For her, it was love at first sight. For him, she was an easy conquest., one of many along the way. What he did not realize was that she was his match.

This #MeToo story is nearly 100 years old and more relevant than ever. “Opera has a lot to say about power relationships and the place of women in society,” says Louisa Proske, co-artistic director of Heartbeat Opera. You can read more about this in Heidi Waleson's article The Redoing of Women.

Here is a graphic synopsis of Josephine's story.
